A
view from Huw S Thomas, Rugby World Schools
Correspondent.
"It is encouraging to see that the teams that are
competing for the top spots in the rankings are those
that are drawing many an admirable comment from close
followers of schoolboy rugby.
The schools and colleges that have reached the last 8 of
the Daily Mail U18 Schools Cup are all strongly placed
with positions over the next month or so sure to reflect
success in the competition.
The Bell Lawrie Scottish Cup winners, Merchiston Castle
plus the two outstanding Welsh Schools League sides of
the moment - Coleg Sir Gar and Bridgend College - are
others that feature prominently.
Schools were forgetting
to update their own results on a regular basis and their
rankings were being affected by this omission. The new
association with SchoolsSports.com allowing schools to
enter results will help overcome this problem.
But we are happy that the computer rankings are a fair
but not infallible reflection of the strength of the
schoolboy rugby scene and we keep looking carefully at
results on the varying circuits to make adjustments
wherever and whenever needed."

"Given the 6 Nations is now underway and some exciting new talent is on display particularly from France.
Is there anybody from schools listed in the Canterbury rankings who you think we will see in a future
Six Nations? Who has been the most valuable player in your team this season? Who has been the most
committed? Who has been the most improved? Why not organise a vote amongst the players?"
2nd November 2007
"I think the rankings are quite a fair reflection of what has taken place this term, there are no
great surprises here, although one issue is that some teams play a lot within the rankings list
and so are able to accumulate a lot of points. Schools that play strong opposition outside of
this list receive no points. Methodist College, Belfast, Terenure
College, Dublin, Blackrock College, Dublin should be
included as they are as strong as anybody in the list.
Do we give any more points for an away win? Home
advantage is significant particularly if the whole
school turns out to support home team!!"
