Champions…that’s Wellington College.
Sir Clive Woodward presented the Daily Mail Schools Trophy on Thursday to the Berkshire school who finished top of the national merit table for 2014 organised by schoolsrugby.co.uk.
The Trophy attracted nearly 100 of the top rugby-playing schools and Wellington emerged successful in the autumn-long competition by winning 11 games from 13. Their only blemishes came in defeat by second-placed Sedbergh and a draw against Dulwich.
England World Cup winning coach Woodward told the Wellington team, led by captain and No 8 Will Wilson, they should be proud of their achievement and urged them to stay involved in rugby wherever their future careers took them.
Some may play professionally and Woodward told them to continually look at how they could improve their own skiils.
‘Individuals can hide in team sports, but it’s the outstanding individuals who make the teams,’ he said. ‘You are certainly the best players in your school but now the target must be to be the best players at national level and then internationally. Always strive to be better.'
