Canford are an emerging force in the SOCS Daily Mail Schools Trophy after reaching the half-term break unbeaten.

Five straight wins has put the Dorset school in line for another top 10 finish after ending last season's campaign in fifth position by winning nine games out of 10.

This time Canford have already atoned for losing to Millfield last year besides accounting for Blundell's, 38-19, and Bryanston, 15-12, in the last two weeks.

Full-back and kicker James Elwood has been one in-form player by kicking all 15 points in the win over Bryanston following a 28-point haul against Blundell's.

Canford, who have established links to the Bath Academy, have gradually improved over the past three years coached by Peter Short, the ex-Leicester and Bath forward who is director of rugby, and ex-Samoan international Junior Paramore.

Short has planned a busy period of five more games after half-term to finish the Trophy season which runs until the end of the autumn term. First up is a trip to Marlborough as part of that school's 175th anniversary.

Canford are among the schools trying to haul down unbeaten champions Wellington in this national competition sponsored by the school management system, SOCS.

Haileybury are another school building connections to a Premiership club - this time European champions Saracens.

Coached by ex-Wales international Michael Owen, Haileybury are also unbeaten in five and finished up before the break by beating Eton, 36-5.

Haileybury turned on the style in the second half after leading 14-0 at the break. Centre Jamie Hoyes scored two tries after the break to round off an excellent contest under the lights of Saracens' Allianz Park.

Brighton College return to Trophy action on Saturday week (November 4), against Skinner's, after winning the prestigious St Joseph's Festival in Ipswich.

Success makes up for losing last year's final to Cranleigh after the teams drew 10-10 and were split by who scored the first try.

This time Brighton defeated Millfield 38-12 inspired by the performances of No 8 Toby Smith who won the player-of-the-tournament.

Among Smith's memorable moments was a first-half charge from his own half which ended in a try.
