Sedbergh beat Millfield 53-12 to win SOCS Daily Mail Schools Trophy and complete 11-game unbeaten campaign

Sedbergh sealed the SOCS Daily Mail Schools Trophy by staging a title-winning all-round performance which gained praise from the opposition.

The Cumbrians raced to a 53-12 win at Millfield leaving opposing coach John Mallett thoroughly impressed at an unbeaten campaign of 11 games.

Sedbergh had finished runners up three times before in this national competition sponsored by SOCS, the school management system, played over the autumn term.

But they made sure this time by playing some outstanding rugby especially over the last month.

Mallett, the former Bath and England prop, said: 'Sedbergh played some excellent rugby right across the board.

'Though they do have a few superstars they are a very good team and a real credit and aren't just a one-man band.'

Mallett was referring to the emergence of Cameron Redpath, the son of Scotland international Bryan, who has played for Sale in the Anglo-Welsh Cup this autumn.

The centre is one of 11 players from the Sedbergh squad likely to be challenging for international youth caps later this season.

He is one of nine in England squads while flanker Charlie Papworth is chasing Welsh honours and lock Jack Hill is in line to play for Scotland.

Sedbergh shot out of the blocks at Millfield on Wednesday scoring in the first try in the opening few minutes to put them on course for the title.

'We played some excellent rugby and scored some fantastic tries,' Simon Mullholland, Sedbergh's head coach, said.

They scored nine tries in all led by two each for wings James Magee and Alex Mullins.

The other scorers were scrum-half Tom Walsh, lock Rouban Birch, full-back Josh Hodge, prop Bevan Rodd and No 8 Rob Farrer.

Sedbergh have lifted the Trophy for the first time in the competition's five-year history.

A win over champions Wellington last week gave them the momentum they continued at Millfield.

Wellington, who were seeking a fourth title, have been hit by injuries in recent weeks and were facing the loss of their title when losing at Harrow, 23-13.

Harrow look set to finish third having put together an unbeaten run of nine games which is insufficient to topple Sedbergh in a competition run on merit table lines.

Besides Harrow, other teams to put together impressive sequences have been Cranleigh, Cheltenham and St Peter's of York.
