Schools Rugby Former champions Woodhouse Grove are showing signs of the form which won them the first Daily Mail Schools Trophy in 2013.

A 15-12 win over QEGS Wakefield was based on fierce defence to give the Bradford-based school a memorable win over county rivals.

QEGS, who were runners up to Bromsgrove in last season’s national knock-out cup, dominated the final stages after falling behind to tries from Grove’s flanker Chris Jackson and hooker Ryan Gibson.

Grove have been rebuilding since winning the title and are seeking to post a better return than last season’s sixth place where they won eight from 11 games.

The back-row forward contributed four tries in a 31-13 win over Bromsgrove, last season’s under-18 knockout cup champions.

Bromsgrove led at half-time only to be overwhelmed in the second half as Williamson struck three times to go alongside his first-half try plus one from scrum-half Jack Dalton.

Bedford, who finished third in last season’s Trophy behind champions Wellington, are so far two from two this season following an opening 47-3 win over Uppingham.

The Trophy, which is organised by schoolsrugby.co.uk for England’s leading rugby-playing schools, promises to be the most competitive so far.

Besides Bedford, champions Wellington, Epsom College, Warwick and Sedbergh are among the unbeaten teams.

Wellington followed up an opening win over Dulwich by holding on to beat Tonbridge 33-21. Epsom, who started out by beating St Paul’s 41-0, staged an excellent second half to overpower Dulwich 38-7, flanker Max Turner and centre Gareth Stephens scoring two tries each.

Warwick, who last week toppled local rivals Bromsgrove, 15-7, had another narrow win this time over Stowe, 20-17.

Sedbergh have demonstrated their usual strength by beating Whitgift, Marlborough and RGS Newcastle.
