Sedbergh overcome defending champions Wellington College to remain unbeaten and stay on course for first Daily Mail Schools Trophy win

Sedbergh have shot to the top of the SOCS Daily Mail Schools Trophy after two wins in five days.

The unbeaten Cumbrians are now in poll position to win the competition for the first time after toppling champions Wellington 39-17 and the inaugural winners of the competition in 2013, Woodhouse Grove, 31-7.

Sedbergh saved their best for a second-half rampage against Wellington at the Broad Street club near Coventry on Wednesday evening.

This annual midweek tussle under lights always attracts plenty of interest from England's Under 18 coaching team and Premiership scouts.

Sedbergh overturned an 11-8 half-time deficit to win by six tries to two. Defeat for Wellington, who are seeking a fourth successive title, followed a loss last Saturday at home to Harrow, 21-13.

Next stop for Sedbergh is Millfield next Wednesday followed by a trip to QEGS Wakefield on December 9.

However, coach Simon Mulholland and his squad are not banking on finishing above Wellington for the first time in this national competition played over the autumn term and sponsored by school management system SOCS.

In 2014, Sedbergh beat Wellington, 37-34, at Broad Street to go top but lost their lead when toppled by Kirkham the next Saturday.

This time Sedbergh (7.10 average match bonus points) have opened a lead of 0.30 over Wellington (6.80) in a competition calculated on a merit table basis.

Wellington fended off early pressure from Sedbergh to lead 8-3 at half-time, helped by a try from Under 16s prop Fin Baxter.

The match turned after the interval. Wellington defended resolutely at first but cracked in the 55th minute when hooker Ben Patchett finished off to follow an opening effort in the first half from front-row colleague Bevan Rodd.

Two more tries in three minutes quickly followed as captain Cam Redpath crossed before wing Tom Walsh squeezed in at the corner.

Sedbergh's last tries came from wing James Magee and impressive full-back Josh Hodge who also landed four kicks.

Wellington's tough week started against Harrow who were recording an eighth win and are now in third place.

The champions finish their Trophy games at Epsom College on Wednesday knowing Sedbergh will lift the crown if they win their last two games.
